The Weight of a Nation carried Ryder Hesjedal to a last minute and well deserved victory at the Giro d'Italia. After 21 days and 2000+ miles of racing though Italy, it all came down to the last stage. Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) and Ryder (Garmin-Barracuda) had traded the leaders jersey during this race but Rodriguez had the lead by 31 seconds going into the final day's individual time trial. The 31.5 kilometer stage wound through the streets of Milan with multiple technical turns, cobble stones, and tracks which all made for a nail biter of a race.
In the end, Ryder had the time trial skills to put him over Rodriguez by just 16 seconds. Ryder becomes the first Canadian to win any Grand Tour. The man with the poker face during this entire race looked to get a little teared up when O Canada was played for his podium presentation.
